A repository of the lion's share of East Africa's birds, this country is rising up out of the shadows of a brutal dictatorial past and before that, European colonialism. Some of the last remaining great mountain gorillas and forest apes reside here, in addition to a rich display of savannah big game, but their future is reliant on tourism and research money from around the world.
