Another biological hotspot in the world has been under threat for many years, and it shows. The palm oil plantations abound, replacing the vital virgin rain forests over most of this 3rd largest island in the world. With the logging and mining extractors you see species loss and native peoples losing ancient traditions and villages. There are bright lights still in Sabah state where the government is much more enlightened than Kalimantan and Sarawak and has reserved, for now, tracts of primary and secondary forests and wetlands for indigenous animals, tourism, and a more traditional way of life. It is a most fascinating place to visit. The people are truly wonderful.
